The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the phenomenom known as the watermark. Until my job was downsized, I worked for Appleton Papers Inc., as the watermark designer. The position was more than simply a job to me; I had a great interest in watermarks and their history.
In these pages you will be able to read a history of watermarks, view a gallery of watermark images from antique books and other documents from my personal collection, and see how watermarked paper is produced.
All of the information which is presented on these pages has been obtained from books and similar sources which exist in the public domain.
