The Hay-Makers Dance was a country dance. Minuets were very popular during the American Revolutionary War period; but reels and country dances were as popular, if not more popular, than the formal minuets.
This song celebrated the activity performed by country folk in the Autumn, when they spent many hours gathering in the hay. No words are known to have been written for the tune.
