The billy club was a weapon used by policemen in the late 1800s and early-1900s. The example shown here measures sixteen and one-half (16-1/2) inches in length and one and three-quarter (1-3/4) inches in diameter. It is composed of a very hard wood, possibly maple, into which has been inserted an iron rod. It is quite heavy, and would have been a very effective tool for the police to use to keep malcontents in line. |
