This copper halfpenny was issued from New York City between 1781 and 1786. Despite their actual date of minting, this group of coins were stamped, variously, with the dates of 1771, 1772, 1774, 1775 and 1776. The coin exhibited here bears the date of 1776. Mimicking the British halfpenny, the obverse of this coin bears the bust of George III looking toward the right. A legend surrounds the image which reads: GEORGIVS III REX, meaning "King George III". The reverse bears the image of seated Britannia holding a spear in her left hand and an olive branch in her right hand. The legend on the reverse states: BRITAN NIA. |
