This is another example of a surfacing or smoothing plane. This one would be a jack or fore plane. It measures 16 inches in length and the stock is 3 inches square. The duty of the jack plane was to shave off large pieces of the wood since it was used in the 'roughing' stage of the job. For that reason, the jack plane's iron was set deep, or as the joiner would say rank. Although it could not be shown here, the blade surface of the iron was slightly curved to better facilitate the shaving of thick pieces from the rough lumber. |
