This is another example of the ladderback chair. This chair appears to be a rustic version of the classic ladderback style. The seat, which is apparently a recent reconstruction, is composed of a sort of hemp rope mesh. This chair probably dates to the early 1900s, and the late 1800s at the earliest. It is a fine example of 'country' furniture, constructed to be sturdy and useful with design being a secondary concern. The stretchers are simple and functional; the finials are also simple knobs. |
