This is another example of a mortar and pestle. Some mortar and pestle sets appear to be mismatched. Over time, as the set is moved around and passed from one person to another, it is very possible that the original pestle might become lost. Another type of kitchen tool that is similar to the pestle is a potato masher (which will appear as exhibits later). So, it is possible that when a pestle would become lost of broken, or otherwise detached from the mortar to which it belonged, the housewife would simply employ a potato masher in its place. This example, though, appears to be a matched original set because the wood appears very similar, and the turned style is similar. |
