The Domestic Art Of Spinning

Hatchel     Exhibit 33

This is an example of how hatchels were attached to other supports. The two individual hatchels were 'riveted' onto a heavier 2" x 6" board, which was itself probably fastened to something else, or had legs attached to it. The supporting board is about four feet in length. The image below shows that the two hatchels have different sized nails to form the 'comb' part, and they seem slightly different in density. The user would first have pulled the scutched flax through the hatchel positioned to the left in the picture, and then through the hatchel positioned to the right, to get the fibers cleaner.
