This is another example of a hatchel. Notice the decorative pattern of holes punched in the metal band's side edge. It is interesting to find something like this on such a mundane, utilitarian implement. A hatchel was intended purely for work, but the owner of this one decided that it did not need to be dull and boring just because it was functional. The simple design of holes would have made the chore of combing flax a bit more enjoyable for the housewife. |
