The money used throughout the American colonies during the American Revolutionary War was of two types: metal coinage issued by European countries, and paper currency printed in the colonies. There were no established mints in the colonies when the War started, but there were plenty of printing firms. Below are images of the obverse and reverse faces of three coins minted in the 1700s: a 1776 Spanish Eight Reales; a 1780 Spanish Two Reales; and a 1776 English Pence. |
Below are images of the obverse and reverse faces of two pieces of paper currency printed in the colony of Pennsylvania in the 1700s: a Six-Pence bill issued on 25 October 1775; and a Two-Shillings bill issued on 02 April 1772. |
