Besides the estates of Lauchope, Bredisholm and Herbertshire, members of the Muirhead family purchased, inherited or otherwise came into possession of a number of other estates and lands in the region around Glasgow. We are aware of many of these estates and lands through a number of sasines (i.e. property records) and retours (i.e. services of heirs). The following are abstracts of the various sasines and retours collected by Diane Baptie, a researcher and member of ASGRA; they are not necessarily direct quotations from the documents.

  Sasine given by James Muirhead elder of Lachope to Dame Margaret Somervill his future spouse and to James Muirhead younger of Lachope of an annualrent of 40 bolls victual (2 parts meal and 1 part bear to be paid yearly at Yule and Candlemas) and 200 merks to be uplifted at two terms from the lands of Chapellands, Bent, Mill and mill lands of Lachope, lands of Cardowochhill, Bellisyd and Syrdrig, all being parts of the 10 merk lands of old extent of Lachope. This was in implementation of the contract of marriage between James Muirhead apparent of Lachope and his grandson and Dame Margaret Somervill future spouse of James Muirhead younger dated 20 October 1620. Witnesses included John Muirhead son of James Muirhead younger of Lachope, Mathew Stewart of Blaverhill, Mr. James Muirhead, son of Mr. Thomas Muirhead of Cambusnethan and James Somervill in Glem and divers others.(^7.19)

  Sasine by James Muirhead elder of Lachope to James Muirhead elder of Lachope and James Muirhead younger and apparent heir and Maria Dalzell, daughter of Sir Robert Dalzell of Elyok, spouse of James Muirhead younger of the lands of Cryndildyk, Braidsheilburne and Nether Alderstoun in the barony of Cambusnethan. Made at Lanark 23 August 1621 and witnessed by Mr. James Muirhead of Shawfute.(^7.20)

  Letter of Redemption made by Mr. David Mathie, schoolmaster in Hamilton and Catherine Muirhead, his spouse of 250 merks. They had been receiving an annualrent of 25 merks out of the lands of Park of Blantyre from James Baillie of Park, following on a contract made between Robert Baillie of Park and her deceased father, James Muirhead of Lachope recorded in a sasine dated 8 March 1577. Their Discharge was dated 7 September 1623. (^7.21)

  James Muirhead of Lachope heir to James Muirhead of Lachope his father in the lands of Capellie in the Lordship of Fairenes and barony of Sempill. (^7.26)

  Sasine given by Mr. John Crawford younger of Ruchsolloche, baillie for Lady Anna Cunningham, Marquess of Hamilton, as commissioner for her deceased husband, James Marquis of Hamilton to James Muirhead now of Lachope of all and haill the lands of Over and Nether Lachope and the lands of Auchinloy, Freeland and Potterland. She had provided a precept of clare constat recognizing his as eldest son and heir to his deceased father, James Muirhead of Lachope dated at Hamilton 10 October 1624. Sasine was witnessed Robert Fleming of Clysyd, Gavine Muirhead in the town of Thankerton, John Massie, Gabriel Weir, servant to James Muirhead, John Inglis of Langbyres, William Brounlie in Auchinloy and John Barie, servant to Thomas Wilson, writer.   Sasine by Thomas Baillie eldest son and apparent heir of Thomas Baillie of Polkennet to John Muirhead, son of James Muirhead of Lachope, as attorney for and in the name of Elesone Muirhead, daughter of James Muirhead, future spouse of Thomas Baillie in liferent of an annualrent of 100 merks to be uplifted out of the 50 shilling lands of Polkennet. Made at Woodhall, last day of August 1625 and witnessed by William Baillie of Carnebrea, John Hamilton of Cousland in Bothwell, Andrew Clark of Woodhall, James Muirhead, son of James Muirhead elder of Lachope and Thomas Baillie younger.   Sasine to James Muirhead son and heir of the deceased James Muirhead of Lachope – refers to the Charter of Alientation granted by William, Lord Sempill to his grandfather, the deceased James Muirhead of Lachope and his spouse, Jonet Baillie of the 40 shilling lands of old extent of Capelleis in the Lordship of Fairnynies, barony of Sempill and Sheriffdom of Renfrew redeemable for 200 merks Scots. They were infest on the 20 December 1552. The 200 merks Scots was paid by the present Lord Sempill and so the lands were redeemed – at Edinburgh 26 March 1627. (^7.29)

  Sasine by James Lockhart fiar of Cleghorne to James Muirhead of Lachope of a part and portion of lands of Southlanrig and a part of his 10 pound lands of old extent in Bothwell with consent of Alexander Lockhart of Cleghorn his father and Nicola Maxwell his mother and Elizabeth Lockhart, his spouse. Precept dated at Edinburgh 8 June 1629. Sasine witnessed by James Muirhead fiar of Lachope, John Douglas, his sevitor, Robert Muirhead servitor to James Muirhead of Lachope, John Hastie in Lanig and Robert Johnston, his servant. (^7.30)

  Sasine by James Muirhead of Lachope to John Hamilton of Orbestoun of a yearly annualrent of 3 pounds Scots out of the lands of Hollingbuss. Made at Hamilton 20 August 1629 and witnessed by Mr. James Muirhead of Shawfute, Mr. James Johnston in Hamilton, James Hamilton, son of David Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, Bartholomew Robertson of Greenhead, James Muire, writer and James Muirhead of Lachope. No Muirhead witnesses to the sasine. (^7.31)

  Records that James Muirhead of Lachope as superior of the lands of Freelands gave sasine to John Hamilton of Orbestoun. Made at Hamilton 20 August 1629 and witnessed by Mr. James Muirhead of Shawfute, Mr. James Johnston in Hamilton, James Hamilton, son if David Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, Bartholomew Robertson of Greenhead, James Muire, writer and James Muirhead of Lachope.   Anna Cunningham, Marquess of Hamilton as commissioner for her deceased son, James Hamilton gave precept of sasine to James Muirhead younger of Lachope, son and apparent heir of James Muirhead elder of Lachope of Ovre and Nether Lachope and to Margaret Somerville, spouse of James Muirhead elder of Lachope of a liferent of 40 bolls of victual as per her contract of marriage. Made at Hamilton, 3 May 1631. No Muirhead witnesses. Witnesses to this sasine - John Muirhead in Jerrestoune, brother german to James Muirhead younger of Lachope, James Muirhead son and apparent heir of James Muirhead of Aikenhead, James Muirheads son and apparent heir of Gavin Muirhead portioner of Thankertoune and John Neilsone son of John Neilsone in Holingbuss.   Sasine – James Muirhead of Lachope to James Muirhead son of Gavin Muirhead, chamberlain and attorney in name of James Muirhead grandson of the said James Muirhead of Lachope, son and apparent heir to John Muirhead of Jerritstoune (variously, Jerrestoune or Jerrestone), son lawful to James Muirhead of Lachope of the old lands of South Lanrig in the barony of Bothwell. At Hamilton, November 1630. Witnesses to the sasine – James Muirhead younger of Lachope and James Muirhead younger of Aikenhead. (^7.34)

  Anna Cunningham, Marquess of Hamilton to James Muirhead younger, son and apparent heir of James Muirhead elder of Lachope of the lands of Potterland, Frieland and Auchinloy. Made at Hamilton 3 May 1631. Witnesses to Sasine – John Muirhead of Jerrestoun, brother to James Muirhead younger of Lachope, Mr. James Muirhead of Aikenhead, James Muirhead his son and heir, Gavin Muirhead of Thankertoun and John Neilson son of JohnMeilson in Holingbus.   Charter to James Muirhead younger of Lachop of the lands of Craigtoun, Thombowie and Carnieddane in Dunbartonshire, the 10 pound lands of Belgreddane, Arranes and Bulleis in Kirkcudbright and the lands of Easter Whitburn and Croftmalloch in the parish of Livingston resigned to him by his father who reserved his liferent.   Sasine by Sir James Somerville of Cambusnethan to James Muirhead of Lachope of the 40 shilling lands of Crindeldyk and Braidsheillburns in the barony of Cambusnethan. James Muirhead is ‘now’ of Lachope as son and heir to his deceased father, James Muirhead of Lachope. At Edinburgh 15 March 1631. (^7.37)

  Retour – William Muirhead heir of James Muirhead, son of Thomas Muirhead, minister of Cambusnethan in church lands of Cambusnethan. (^7.38)

  Retour – Thomas Muirhead heir to Mr. Thomas Muirhead, minister at Cambusnethan, his grandfather in the 10 shilling lands of Chowhill together with Chowhill-mure in the barony of Cambusnethan. (^7.39)

  In the book, Descriptions Of The Sheriffdoms Of Lanark And Renfrew, certain other estates are mentioned in regard to being owned by members of the Muirhead family. They include the following:(^7.40)

     In a discussion of the parish of Libertoun and Quodquhan, it was noted that: “There are in this parish the lands of Whytecastle, belonging to ----- Murehead.”

     In a discussion of the estate of Stonehouse, it was noted of Joneta Bailye, domina de Cruddildykes, that: “This lady, at her decease, was wife of Hamilton Stanhouse, as appears here: -“hos costituo meos exeres viz, Jo Hamiltone de Stanhous, meum maritum, cum filio meo, Jacobus Muirheid…”

     In a discussion of the parish of Bothwell, the estate of Stevenson is mentioned: “This is ane old family of the name of Stevensone, and called chief of his name; but this gentleman’s father, having maried the heiresse, heth not changed his name, but is designed James Muirhead of Stevenson.” It was also noted that: “About a short mile streight north from Carphin stands the house of Stevenson. This was formerly the residence of Stevensone of that Ilkm who pretended to be the mother family and chief of the name. It was last possessed by George Muirhead of Stevensone, brother to James Muirhead of Bridsholme, but now under sequestration for the behove of the creditors. The house is quite ruinous.”
