At the beginning of this volume, in the section titled, The Other Muirheads, it is noted that, in the case of families of Muirheads whose descent cannot be easily traced to Willielmo de Muirhead, it is possible that they were simply omitted from the ‘official’ lineage. In the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries, the surname of Muirhead, in whatever spelling variation, did not exist independent of the village of that name. It was first used by Willielmo in the form of a territorial surname with the preposition 'de' to denote 'from'.
As was noted in the section titled, The Other Muirheads, a man by the name of George de Murhede signed a charter as a witness to it on 14 February 1486. Four years later, on 15 October 1490, Robert Murehed of Le Wyndehillis deeded lands in Roxburgh to his son, George. There is no village or parish by the name of Wyndehillis (nor any variation of that name). Apparently, the name of Wyndehillis is that of an estate, in the same way that the name Lauchope referred to an estate.
It is possible that Robert Murehed of Le Wyndehillis and his son, George were, in fact, descended from Willielmo de Muirhead and his wife Jean - possibly through Willielmo’s grandson, John Muirhead of Lauchope & Bullis and his wife, Margaret (Hepburn).
In view of the habit families have had through the centuries of naming their children after ancestors, it is possible that the man named George Muirhead, who was born in the year 1580 at Falkirk, in Stirlingshire, might have been named after the George de Murhede who witnessed the charter nearly one hundred years earlier. The available records do not allow for a definitive statement on this conjecture.
George Muirhead was born circa 1580 at Falkirk, in Stirlingshire, Scotland.(3.35) He married a lady by the name of Janet circa 1610. Janet was born circa 1582. The couple gave birth to one child, a son named Patrick. Patrick was born on 30 October 1611 at Falkirk.
Patrick Muirhead, son of George and Janet Muirhead, married Margaret Smith on 27 March 1632 at Falkirk. Margaret was born circa 1611 at Falkirk, in Stirlingshire, Scotland. They gave birth to: Margaret, born January 1637; a second daughter named Margaret, born June 1638; William, born June 1640; Patrick Jr., born November 1642; Bessie, born February 1645; Agnes, born August 1647; and a second son named Patrick, born January 1653.
William Muirhead, son of Patrick and Margaret Muirhead, married Janet Livingstone on 29 August 1663 at Falkirk. Janet was born on 06 October 1640 at Falkirk. The couple gave birth to: Elspet, born September 1664; Patrick, born August 1665; Robert, born December 1666; John, born April 1668; Patrick (2), born January 1670; Margaret, born June 1671; Isabel, born October 1672; Katherine, born June 1674; Jean, born October 1675; Margaret (2), born September 1676; and twin William Jr., born September 1676.
Robert Muirhead, son of William and Janet Muirhead, was married twice. His first wife was Anna. They gave birth to: James. Robert’s second marriage was to Mary Johnstone on 03 March 1696 at Falkirk. Mary was born in August 1674 at Falkirk. Robert and Mary gave birth to: Margaret, born 06 December 1696; Anna, born October 1698; Janet, born September 1700; Mary, born April 1702; William, born April 1704; Patrick, born May 1706; and Agnes, born May 1708.
James Muirhead, son of Robert and Anna Muirhead, married Elizabeth Muirhead, the daughter of Patrick and Agnes Muirhead, in 1727. They gave birth to: Helen, born 02 June 1728; Agnes, born 1733; Katharin, born 1733; and James Jr., born 1735. The father, James died in 1735.
Helen Muirhead, daughter of James and Elizabeth Muirhead, married Alexander Muirhead on 14 October 1749 at Falkirk. Alexander was a son of Michael Muirhead and Margaret Ewing and a grandson of John Muirhead and Anna Jervey. He was born on 08 November 1730. Alexander and Helen gave birth to: Margaret, born 1750; James, born 1751; Michael, born 1753; Elizabeth, born 1755; John, born 1757; Thomas, born 1759; Alexander, born 1761; and Robert, born 18 February 1763. Margaret Muirhead, daughter of Robert and Mary Muirhead, married Thomas Karter on 15 April 1715 at Falkirk. Thomas was born circa 1690 at Falkirk. The couple gave birth to: Marian, born 19 February 1716; John, born January 1718; James, born June 1719; Eupham, born July 1724; and Thomas Jr., born January 1727.
Marian Karter, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Karter, married Thomas Ewen on 05 April 1737 at Falkirk. Thomas was born on 24 October 1703 at Falkirk. They gave birth to: Margaret Euen, born 13 November 1738.
Margaret Euen Ewen, daughter of Thomas and Marian Ewen, married Archibald Calander on 05 December 1765 at Watterside, St. Ninians, in Stirlingshire. Archibald was born on 16 March 1733. The couple gave birth to: Margaret, born 24 July 1777.

John Muirhead, son of William and Janet Muirhead, married Janet Mackie on 01 May 1694 at Falkirk. Janet was born circa 1673 at Falkirk. They gave birth to: John Jr., born March 1695.
John Muirhead Jr., son of John and Janet Muirhead, married Margaret Aitkan on 06 February 1720 at Falkirk. They gave birth to: James, born 25 February 1720; Henry, born 29 January 1721; John Mickle, born 17 June 1722; and Agnes, born 10 October 1725. (Note: The Muirhead Clan Society database includes another Falkirk family whose father is John Muirhead, born 1695 and whose mother is Mary Aitken. It is very coincidental that this other family contains four children bearing the exact names of this family: Henry, John, James, and Agnes. It would appear that the database manager failed to notice this coincidence. Assuming that such a coincidence could not actually have occurred in real life, I have merged the two families’ information.)
