James Muirhead married Margaret Elphinstone MacKinnon on 15 October, 1766 at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Margaret was born at Glasgow, the daughter of John MacKinnon and Jean -----. Her middle name came from the surname of Elphinstone, thereby suggesting that her mother’s ancestry derived from that clan.

The seat of the Elphinstone clan was located In Stirlingshire, near the barony of Plean, and were known as ‘Airth.’ The Elphinstone clan’s name is believed to have been derived from a place name: Elfinstun. Although some traditions claim that the name is derived from a Flemish knight’s name of Helphenstein. The clan is believed to have originated around the year 1230; the first use of the name appeared in the year 1235 in a deed. Sir John de Elfinstun married Margaret of Seton, Robert the Bruce’s niece.

Clan MacKinnon was a branch of the Siol Alpin, which claimed descent from Kenneth MacAlpin through his great-grandson, Fingon. The clan originally possessed the estate of Griban, on the island of Mull, but they exchanged that estate for Mishnish on the same island. Among other lands on the islands of Arran, Tiree, Pabay and Scalpa, the MacKinnons also came into possession of the estate of Strathordell on the island of Skye. It is believed that John MacKinnon was the last Chief of the original Clan MacKinnon. As a result, Margaret, the daughter of John MacKinnon, was known as Lady MacKinnon of the Isle of Skye of that Ilk. John MacKinnon made a living as the Surveyor of Customs as Greenock.

James Muirhead made a living as a saddler in the city of Glasgow. In 1781, he was appointed to the position of Burgess of the Burgh of Hamilton. A manuscript stated:(3.10)
