The following genealogy, showing the first twelve generations of the Family of Muirhead, has been culled from a number of sources including Alexander Nisbet’s book, A System of Heraldry, Speculative and Practical: With the True Art of Blazon; According to the Most Approved Heralds in Europe: Illustrated with Suitable Examples of the Most Considerable Surnames and Families in Scotland, &c., published in 1742 and The Morehead Family Of North Carolina And Virginia, by John M. Morehead, published in 1921.
As has been noted elsewhere in this volume, there have been very few books published on the subject of the family’s history, and the accuracy of the information contained in them may be questionable. Certain information has been found to be discrepant between the two books cited here, and both disagree in certain instances with information found in contemporary public records. The reader is therefore cautioned that any genealogy dealing with generations removed by six or seven centuries cannot help but be prone to some percentage of error.
The reader should notice that in this genealogy, the icon placed immediately to the left of an entry contains a link to a page quoting from either one of the source books noted above (cited by author’s name), or from another source. Please also note that the quotations, although abbreviated, retain the spelling, grammar and formatting of the original source. Names which are included that are not followed by a source box have been derived from the Muirhead Clan Society database, the sources of which are either not known or not proven. It should also be noted that certain groups of individuals, for which source information is the same, will be found to be referenced at the earliest ancestral family (e.g. John Hamilton of Udstoun married to Margaret Muirhead). Individual note pages are not provided for each progeny.
